One of the first things Alibaba founder Jack Ma did when he was in Manila recently: testing the speed of the Internet. “It’s no good,” he said.

That’s the slowest in the region, according to a report. The global average internet connection speed is 7.2 Mbps, but the Philippines just had an average of 5.5 Mbps.

However, that’s not the bad thing, Mr. Jack said. Every problem is an opportunity. “Opportunity exists in the areas where most people complain. If you can solve the complaint, you have a chance. When we started Alibaba, internet speed in China was terrible – much worse than here now,” he said.
