From June 1, ten online news sites, including Yahoo! Singapore, will be required to follow the same regulatory framework as traditional media. Local authority asked them to apply an individual license, meaning that the existing class license under the Broadcasting Act no longer valid. Under the new licensing scheme, these online news sites are expected to remove content that is in breach of MDA standards within 24 hours. The sites will also be required to put up a performance bond of S$50,000, like all other individually-licensed broadcasters. The individual licenses have to be renewed every year.

The new license will also affect local bloggers if they write about Singapore’s news and current affair at least once a week and have at least 50,000 monthly unique visitors.
