Twitter rocks! Two Indonesian Twitter people, Thomas Arie and Vetamandra just broke the news about earthquake at their hometown, Jogjakarta, Central Java, Indonesia.

thomasarie tweeted at 13.45 pm:

EARTHQUAKE in #jogjakarta

vetamandra tweeted at 13.50 pm

Barusan ada gempa cukup kencang di bantul yogyakarta!

The country’s mainstream media, news portal Detik (at 14.27 pm) and Viva (at 14.33 pm) just picked-up the news almost one hour later. At that moment (even at the time I wrote this post), there are no Indonesian TV coverages about this quake!

thomasarie’s recent tweets:

I tweet less than a minutes after I felt the quake, after went back to my room. Turn on the TV waiting for updates, no news at all. #jogja 10 minutes ago from TwitterFox

Other Indonesia’s Tweeters are forwarding (“retweeting”) the two Jogjakarta’s Twiterers to spread the news.

Ah yes, there is an interesting news about the media coverage. One of Indonesia’s most active Twitterers, Aulia Masna, picked up the news about a media that published the wrong map and tweeted it.

Since when is Jogja in Sumatra? Stupid Vivanews. http://skitch.com/t/mir

Here is the map:

Bravo Twitter!
