Happy 20th birthday, Linux!

Linux turns 20 this month. The open system has been offering another option and opportunities to the world.

In case you’ve been living under a rock for the last two decades, Linux is part of pretty much every technology ecosystem–mobile (Android), Web (Google), consumer (TiVo), and powers a huge amount of the Internet itself. And it continues to grow, both as an enabler of new services in the cloud and as the operating system that powers huge corporate data centers.

Will open source accept Microsoft leadership?

Microsoft will be a “platinum sponsor” at the Open Source Business Conference in San Francisco next month. Even one of its execs, Stuart McKee, will deliver a keynote at the event. Looks like “Microsoft is determined to be a leader of the open source movement,” Dana Blankenhorn wrote.

Wikipedia reaches fundraising goal

In order to stay independent, Wikipedia and other Wikimedia properties prefers to rely on donations from users rather than accepting advertising and sponsorships. A unique approach and worked well so far. .

In what has become a Christmas tradition, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales posted a personal appeal for donations to the Wikimedia Foundation earlier this month. On the first day alone, the nonprofit raised $430,000 from 13,000 people. Today, Wales announced that Wikimedia reached its fundraising goals. In total, the foundation managed to raise $7.5 million. Last year, when Wales posted a similar appeal, the Wikimedia Foundation received $6.2 million from 125,000 donors.

The non-profit organization has 35 employees and needs around $10 million overhead cost per year
