Facebook must avoid these 3 mistakes

Ex-COO of MySpace Amit Kapur shared the lessons he learned from MySpace for Facebook. He joined MySpace – was the social network before Facebook, just like Yahoo was the search engine before Google– when it was just a startup, stayed until after it was acquired by News Corp for $580 million in 2005.
The following are his tips and advice for Facebook.
- Don’t prioritize revenue over user experience. This made him frustrating constantly after MySpace was acquired.
- Don’t limit conversations to friends. Facebook posts are only seen by friends, people will have to go to other sites like Tumblr and Twitter then.
- People love to share photos. Beyond Instagram’s deal, FB has to come up with ways to make their own photo sharing better.

My colleague Jeremy Wagstaff wrote an interesting piece on Skype and highlighted that the service is still the world’s biggest social network! [To be honest, I was also not aware about this fact!]
We talk about Facebook, twitter, MySpace and Friendster as the big social networks but we keep forgetting one that is far bigger than that: Skype. This from a Bloomberg piece on Skype’s vacillating fortunes:
Skype has soared in popularity since it started in 2003 and has about 548 million users worldwide—more than Facebook, MySpace and Twitter combined.
