Mentoring Lenovo Do Network
Posted on January 16, 2012 by Budi Putra in Science

I just took Lenovo‘s challenge to be one of their mentors for The Do Network project.
Together with Indonesia’s internet advocate Onno W. Purbo and scientist Nurdiansah, I am now starting to learn some submitted innovations for this project. Some cool innovations out there.
The Do Network from Lenovo is a platform for turning ideas into action. Every 90 days we’ll introduce a new theme, complete with challenges that push ourselves to do what has never been done before. We have a lot of ways for you to get involved and help push a project toward the finish line. You could win a Do machine or a $25,000 USD grant to help bring your idea to life.
Lenovo kicked-off this project last month in Indonesia, India and Russia.
Are you the one who invents and discovers something? Submit your dreams and ideas here!

Indonesia’s most followed media on Twitter
Posted on November 5, 2010 by Budi Putra in Featured, Media
SINCE TWITTER TOOK OVER the media “role”, the large media organizations see this as an opportunity to reach and engage their readers online.
That idea is totally valid. When it comes to breaking news and exclusive news, everyone still relies on mainstream media. Public always wanted to get the confirmed informations and the in-depth stories from the media guys, because they have their own infrastructure, networks, editors, writers and reporters.
If you are into Indonesian news and updates; and love Twitter, you’re so lucky. You can follow a bunch of local media Twitter accounts –some of them have thousands of followers (please keep in mind that only media with than 10,000 followers added to the list).

Ushahidi: Let’s create ‘crowdmap’ for Mentawai and Merapi!
Posted on October 29, 2010 by Budi Putra in Tech
In the aftermath of disasters like the tsunami in West Sumatra and the eruption of Mount Merapi in Central Java, everyone can contribute and participate. They can play their own role. Whatever they can do to help the victims, survivors, rescuers and volunteers.
Or you can even contribute as an online volunteer –share useful links and info through Twitter, blog, instant messaging or even short message service.
You also can try to use and optimize Ushahidi platform that’s powered by public users and could “map out disaster areas more quickly and effectively than governments can,” according to CNN. “The more information about a disaster you can make public, the better… You don’t need specific technical skills to volunteer, just an internet connection.”
They introduce themselves:
The Ushahidi Platform allows anyone to gather distributed data via SMS, email or web and visualize it on a map or timeline. Our goal is to create the simplest way of aggregating information from the public for use in crisis response.
Ushahidi, which means “testimony” in Swahili, is a website that was initially developed to map reports of violence in Kenya after the post-election fallout at the beginning of 2008. Ushahidi’s roots are in the collaboration of Kenyan citizen journalists during a time of crisis. The website was used to map incidents of violence and peace efforts throughout the country based on reports submitted via the web and mobile phone. This initial deployment of Ushahidi had 45,000 users in Kenya, and was the catalyst for us realizing there was a need for a platform based on it, which could be use by others around the world.
Can someone out there start to sign-up and create the Mentawai and Merapi Crisis Map in the Ushahidi Platform so people can start to share data into the platform?

Posted on October 25, 2010 by Budi Putra in Media
Is it The Jakarta Post? No. The Indonesian Times? No. Okay – so it’s the Indonesian Observer, isn’t it? No, no.
The Jakarta Globe –the country’s newest English language newspaper– writes:
Its name was the Java Government Gazette…
The first edition of the Java Government Gazette was delivered to subscribers on Feb. 29, 1812, and for the next four years it appeared without fail every Saturday.
It was a broadsheet, more or less the same size as your modern Globe, though it usually ran to only four pages.

TEDx Jakarta
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=66381544606
TED is an annual event where some of the world’s leading thinkers and doers are invited to share what they are most passionate about. “TED” stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design — three broad subject areas that are, collectively, shaping our future. And in fact, the event is broader still, showcasing ideas that matter in any discipline. Attendees have called it “the ultimate brain spa” and “a four-day journey into the future.” The diverse audience — CEOs, scientists, creatives, philanthropists — is almost as extraordinary as the speakers, who have included Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Frank Gehry, Paul Simon, Sir Richard Branson, Philippe Starck and Bono.
TED was first held in Monterey, California, in 1984. In 2001, Chris Anderson’s Sapling Foundation acquired TED from its founder, Richard Saul Wurman. In recent years, TED has expanded to include an international conference, TEDGlobal; media initiatives, including TED Talks and TED.com; and the TED Prize. TED2010, “What the world Needs Now,” will be held Feb 9-13, 2010, in Long Beach, California, with a simulcast event in Palm Springs, California. TEDGlobal 2009, “The Substance of Things Not Seen,” will be held July 21-24, 2009, in Oxford, UK and TEDIndia will be held in November 2009.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxJakarta, where x=independently organized TED event. At our TEDxJakarta event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group.

Hero or not hero, that’s question
Posted on October 18, 2010 by Budi Putra in Politics
The Jakarta Post writes:
The government has proposed late former president Soeharto and nine other deceased figures to get national hero status to the Honor and Service Council, Cabinet secretary Dipo Alam said in Jakarta Sunday.
Dipo said that the proposal, made by the Ministry of Social Service, was being assessed by the Honor and Service Council before being decided by the President.
“It’s not true that one Pak Harto will get the national hero status. There are nine others who are being proposed by the Ministry of Social Service,” Dipo said as quoted by kompas.com.
Suharto (8 June 1921 – 27 January 2008) was the second President of Indonesia, toppled from power in 1998 after ruling the country for 32 years (1967-1998). Some recognized him as Indonesia’s “Father of Development” due to his service to the country; while critics blamed him responsible to some human rights violations and corruption scandals.
Do you think Pak Harto deserved to get national hero title? Why?
