Why the social browser failed?

Posted on April 13, 2011 by in People, Tech

The social browser Flock is officially closed today. The sophisticated browser will be discontinued as of April 26th, 2011 and recommending their existing users migrate to other web browsers as soon as possible.

According to TechCrunch:

Flock originated on the Mozilla platform but then switched over to Chromium in 2010. At its height it had 10 million users but then fell by the wayside just as the better funded RockMelt was emerging in the same super niche and perhaps unwarranted market.

Why the sophisticated browser like Flock is finally in the deadpool? Or people don’t need a dedicated browser for their social network activities? Since people prefer using mobile device to connect with their friends and family, do they need a social browser for mobile instead?

Tell me what you think.

The first mobile phone version of the popular web browser Firefox, Fennec, will initially hit Nokia’s N900 phone soon, even “before the end of the year”. According to Jay Sullivan at Mozilla, the mobile browser is currently going through final testing and will be able to synchronise with the desktop version. “At the end of the working day you can walk away from your computer and keep on going on your phone,” Mr Sullivan told the BBC.

Bing is not that popular for Firefox

Seems Microsoft’s Bing is not popular enough for Firefox users, according to a Mozilla exec. That’s why an add-on is required to add Bing as a search option from within Firefox. Another home-work for Microsoft’s search engine to fight against Google.

If you download a fresh copy of Firefox, you’ll note that the default search engine is not whatever you already have picked in all your other browsers. Instead, Mozilla chooses Firefox’s default search engine, and the list of search providers in the accompanying drop down menu, based on their popularity. Thus, Bing isn’t one of the choices.
