ViKi debuts iPhone app!

Posted on September 26, 2011 by in Entertainment

International video site for world TV series and movies translated in 100+ languages by its community Viki is debuting a new iPhone app called ViKi On-The-Go [iTunes link].

The 2011 Crunchies Award winner and SXSW Accelerator Top 3 Finalist is also partnering up with Samsung to develop an Android app for the company’s tablets in Southeast Asia.

ViKi is also working on content partnerships with BBC Worldwide, Netflix and Hulu.

“I think Viki’s real power is as a content pipe sending shows to bigger players that it has unlocked from behind the language barrier,” Forbes wrote.

“The Web is so powerful today and the valuations are so high, because it is a billion-person-audience and growing. But more of them speak Chinese than English, and critical masses are developing around Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Bahasa Indonesia and other languages,” Sarah Lacy of TechCrunch added.

Currently, ViKi has more than 8.5 million unique visitors and 36 million total visits in the past month.

Android TweetDeck, starting beta test this week

Posted on August 10, 2010 by in Tech

I am currently using Seesmic for Android — that’s a nice app for Twitter though, but TweetDeck for Android is also worth trying… Can’t wait to get this on my Droid!

To get straight to the point, we’re nearing completion of Android TweetDeck and we’ve really been pushing the limits of what Android can do. Hence we will be opening up a public beta testing period this week for some serious device testing. But before all that happens I wanted to briefly explain what Android TweetDeck means to us because it’s more than just TweetDeck on Android.

First off, we’ve built Android TweetDeck from the ground up to be true multi-stream, laser focused on showing you all your friends’ cross-service activity in one app. Multi-column is still the order of the day but now columns are blended based on the type of activity rather than the service. And all this whilst retaining the most powerful functionality from each included service.

We’ve spent an inordinate amount of time making the app silky smooth from the column scrolling to the custom views – so much so that one of Google’s Android Developer Advocates recently described it as “a thing of beauty”. So look out for the beta test later this week and please do get involved.

PayPal announces the latest version of the PayPal mobile app for Android. Just like its iPhone version, the app also uses bump technology that allow you to simply tap two phones together to send money. This app is free and and available now in the Android Market.

“Split the check is another great feature, which lets you automatically calculate the total cost of a bill and then collect money directly from friends when out to dinner,” according to Laura Chambers, senior director of PayPal Mobile.

Mobile phone inventor using Droid and iPhone!

Posted on March 13, 2010 by in People

Martin Marty Cooper (born December 26, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois, USA) is considered the inventor of the first handheld cellular phone. Right now, he is using Droid mostly; also mentioned iPhone; and admitted trying every cell phone out.

Cspan: What kind of cell phone do you have?

Martin Cooper: “It depends when you ask me. I, always have the latest cell phone, and I try every cell phone out, only because people like you keep asking me. Right now I’m using Droid, because I want to get some experience with the Android operating system, and I so far, have some pretty favorable results. I’ve had an iPhone, which I gave to my grandson, which he used for three months and then I had to upgrade to a  better version. And I’ve tried many other phones. For my day to day conversations I actually use the Jitterbug. So I carry two phones, one very simple phone that I can flip open that has a very simple phone book and nothing else. But when I want to twitter – tweet, then, I use my Droid.”

Google Nexus One for Singapore, Hong Kong residents

Posted on January 6, 2010 by in Tech

It’s a really good news for Asia-based Google gadget fans. Google launced their super hyped phone, the Nexus One, today. The “super phone” is initially available in four countries: the US, UK, Singapore and Hong Kong. [Vodafone will begin selling Nexus One for Europe this spring]. Anyway, here’s the official pricing of international shipping for those outside the U.S:

* Nexus One Phone $529.99 * AC Adaptor $19.99 * Shipping (DHL International) $29.65

Duties and taxes will be payable to the courier on receipt of order:

* Hong Kong:  no VAT or GST! (for Hong Kong users, at least around US$580 or HK$4500 needed to get this device delivered to their home) * Singapore: 7% Goods and Services Tax on the Cost, Insurance & Freight (“Shipping the phone to Singapore, including all tax and shipping costs will sum up to approx 800 S$ at the moment,” according to a local blogger). * United Kingdom: 17.5% VAT on the total cost of order including all shipping costs and insurance.

How to order The Nexus One online

1. Create a Google Checkout Account (https://checkout.google.com) 2. If you already have a Google CheckOut account, make sure your location is setup as “Singapore” or “Hong Kong” –depends on your current location. 3. Go To www.google.com/phone and click on the big blue (Get your phone) button 4. Select the first option “Nexus One Phone” without any Telco involvement and click “continue” 5. Choose if you want your Nexus One to be engrave or blank and click “continue” or “skip this step” 6. Put in your shipping/billing details /credit card details and ORDER

The following is the overall total cost of ownership of the Nexus One vs. iPhone vs. Droid vs. Palm Pre, thanks to BillShrink website!
Beyond the international shipping scheme (which means online order), another local blogger wrote:

It is expected that StarHub, SingTel and M1 have already signed-up with Google to offer the Nexus One mobile phone in Singapore. The three major Singapore telcos are probably just waiting for one of the telcos to reveal their plans and pricing of the Nexus One on their service so as to grab the maximum initial market share in this 3-4 million potential customer base. SingTel, StarHub and M1 are likely to offer the Nexus One with the same data plans as currently being offered for Apple’s iPhone 3G and 3GS. The Singapore customers are likely to benefit from the huge data plans (12GB depending upon the plan selection).

Official WordPress app for Android?

Posted on January 3, 2010 by in Tech

So after creating apps for both the iPhone and Blackberry, WordPress looks like going to launch their app for Android platform. WordPress has created a special blog using subdomain Android.wordpress.org, which they have done something similar with the iPhone and Blackberry, and based on that fact my friend, could be a hint that there’s a future app coming upon Google’s mobile platform :)

I think Android as well as WordPress communities and bloggers will celebrate this upcoming feature. Despite there is no details in its launch date, but seems it will be launched in the near future.

Hands on: Motorola Milestone, Motorola DEXT

Posted on December 18, 2009 by in Tech

LAST NIGHT I HAD A CHANCE playing with two wonderful Android handsets: Motorola Milestone (aka DROID) and Motorola DEXT (aka CLIQ), thanks to a friend from Motorola. Milestone is good for business people, while DEXT is a must have device for social networking fans. Both offer touchscreen capability as well as physical keypads. Good thing is that both devices will hit the Asian market soon.

Milestone, which has multitouch capability and a Qwerty slider,  runs on Google’s open-source Android OS 2.0. It packs a large 3.7-inch touchscreen, 5MP camera, microSDHC slot, Wi-Fi and GPS. Milestone also supports Flash-based webpages. It sports a dual-band 3G support for Europe and Asia. And it has smarter messaging, too.

DEXT, the company’s first foray into Android territory, is a QWERTY side slider. It runs the MOTOBLUR (a feature to track tweets, status updates and emails and merge them with your Google account to fill up the phone’s address book), and has a 3.1-inch HVGA screen (capacitive touchscreen), 5MP autofocus camera, 3G and Wi-Fi. Its fully customisable homescreen is awesome.
